Long Crendon County Combined Primary School

Long Crendon SchoolOriginally built as a secondary school in 1964, the premises became the primary school in 1972. Set within large expanses of playground and playing fields with surrounding views of farmland, the buildings house spacious, light classrooms. Throughout, you'll find countless displays of what the children have been working on – all kinds of artwork, literacy and topic projects too.

In 2008 Ofsted awarded the school ‘Outstanding' in every category. The report commended the children for being ‘extremely well behaved, polite and considerate' and congratulated them on ‘achieving extremely well, reaching high standards and showing caring attitudes'. Other key aspects highlighted in the report were the:

  • rich programme of activities and lessons
  • extra-curricular lessons in music, drama, dance and sport
  • wide range of educational and residential visits
  • strong links with the local churches and village
  • involvement of pupils as school councillors, house captains and playground buddies

All classes are mixed ability and every teacher is supported by at least one teaching assistant. In addition, many ‘parent hours' are volunteered each week to help with reading, cooking, swimming and special project days. Children are encouraged to use lots of hands-on activities and every classroom is equipped with an interactive white board.

Values education
The ethos of the school views education beyond the attainment of academic and practical skills. To augment the children's personal development and understanding of the society in which they live, ‘Values education' is incorporated into many aspects of school life. Each month a different ‘value' is assigned – examples include patience, truth, kindness, courage – and children are encouraged to consider the meaning of the value. The ‘value' is introduced during an assembly and reminders of it are displayed around the school, children are encouraged to talk about it at home too.

Excellent facilities
In addition to the class teaching rooms, assembly hall and dining room the school is fortunate in having separate rooms for:

  • Music
  • ICT (a comprehensive suite with its own server)
  • Art, design and technology
  • Library

Long Crendon SchoolBeyond the curriculum
Outside, there are extensive playing fields where children can let off steam and those (few) that prefer less energetic pursuits can explore the allotment area or follow the Nature trail. In 2008 the playground was re-designed to incorporate lots of permanent play equipment – much of it suggested and chosen by the children themselves. The outdoor swimming pool (no deep end) is used for lessons during the summer term.

Music: the school employs a Music teacher and in addition, private tuition for a range of instruments is provided by peripatetic tutors. The school has its own choir and orchestra - ‘The Cool Crescendos' - who are often invited to perform at events in the local area.

Clubs: run by teachers and in some cases external providers the variety of activities offered include tennis, netball, table tennis, gardening, oware (a boardgame), dance and drama.

Long Crendon SchoolPTA
An energetic and successful PTA raises thousands of pounds every year by organising events that really put the ‘fun' into fundraising. These include quiz nights, dinner dances, sponsored walks and much more. All money raised is spent for the benefit of the pupils.
